Rent-a-CIO

Being a leader requires skill. However, in many companies strategically important positions are more than often remain unoccupied due to the lack of skilled people. Especially in mid-sized economies the position of Managing Director IT or Board Member (CIO) is frequently not filled,...

... because a full position is not deemed necessary in the long run. Or it is because a suitable executive cannot be found.

The will is there to place strategically important issues on management level, but complex IT projects cannot be dealt with by managers alongside their other responsibilities.

How do you implement painful changes to your IT environment?

In most companies IT has become a business critical application.
It begins to hurt when the evolved structures are about to be changed. Most employees working in IT still believe that the technology, for which they are responsible, is an end in itself. The focus of individual employees is often very restricted and seldom allows a holistic view of the entire IT system.

The fact that IT represents the backbone of the company or even of entire groups is not apparent to most technically oriented staff. What makes matters worse is that – staying with the image of the backbone - all important departments and company segments on the one hand depend on the IT systems' data and information, but on the other hand also want to have a large say in IT affairs

Why more than 70% of all Software implementations fail

If we now start introducing a new communication system or a CRM environment, or even a superordinate business solution, it will typically result in problems concerning responsibilities and hierarchy. If, for example, a member of the Marketing department takes over responsibility for the introduction of a CRM system, he needs to be prepared for enmities from other departments and interest groups.

Why do we now need to capture so much new data for client contacts? Our employees have no time for this -

- The sales manager -

- Why are all our entries saved stating time and date? - This is against data protection laws -

-The works council -

- If someone from the Marketing department implements the software, we cannot guarantee that it will work.

- The IT manager -

However, there are consultants for each software solution

That's right, in many cases the problem is addressed in this way. Unfortunately, however, this solution is often unable to prevent the frequent failures. Consultants are consultants - not managers. It is often the case that partial aspects are solved 100% by individual people, whereas the holistic view falls by the wayside. Even worse, the consultant is left to the discretion of the marketing management in our example, and is subjected to the same enmities and doubts by sceptics as is the internal staff member.

In many cases the integration phases are sheer endless, where the responsibility is handed around. The inhibitors, be it for strategic or convenience reasons, always win, because maintaining a schedule also forms part of the successful completion of a project.
