The Way Through the CloudNew trends in IT are opening new markets and adding new customers. The introduction of IT virtualisation in the x86 market segment has given rise to new opportunities for sales and the distribution of software and services. Key words such as SaaS (Software as a Service) or CloudComputing exemplify this development. CloudComputing is an umbrella term which stands for the virtually unlimited ability to distribute applications using the internet as a sales and distribution channel. Red Carpet: VMware with IBM BladeCenter SThe challenge: More with lessMany companies are searching for new technologies and strategies to simplify their IT and reduce their IT-related costs. Until recently, the IT infrastructure of companies has usually been limited for budget and space reasons. A virtualised IT infrastructure is able to provide you with significant advantages - among others, IT consolidation, reduced and from a single source. IBM and VMware make things easy for you. They offer a cost-efficient entry into the virtualised IT world for small to medium-sized companies with VMware ESX4 hypervisor, installed on one or more powerful IBM BladeCenter HS22 XM Bladeservers in a BladeCenter S chassis.
Operating System - The OrganisationDoing the laundry is men's work! No? Yes, it is!
Well, what's still impossible in the wash-kitchen is already reality in IT. Virtualisation based on VMware or XEN today allows various operating systems to easily run side-by-side on one piece of hardware. What's more, it is possible to run the same operating systems in different versions. Every financial controller and every company director would like to achieve high utilisation of machines and equipment. Investments in production systems should be utilised to the best effect. A comprehensive study by IBM showed that the CPU utilisation of most Windows servers ranges between 5 and 10%. Obviously, this is not in line with corporate goals. Virtualising operating systems allows high utilisation and, at the same time, higher availability compared to traditional installations, making IT investments much more efficient. In practice, the number of servers could be reduced up to 10 fold using virtualisation. Operating costs are reduced while flexibility increases.
