Server - Disk Virtualisation
ervers do not require hard disks! Let your SAN store critical operating systems. Today's iSCSI technology allows you to let your server take over computing. This saves space and reduces Maintenance.
In the near future, the connection between hard disk and server will already be part of the past. The main manufacturers such as NetApp, SUN or IBM, who offer secure SAN units with improved scalability, allow direct connection of servers to the SAN via iSCSI or FiberChannel (FC) without the need for proprietary disks.
You will gain assurance, knowing that a server can be exchanged for another server within seconds. It requires a mere configuration entry on the "filer" to start full operation on a replacement server.
Fast FC or iSCSI Ethernet switches today form part of the standard offering from manufacturers such as Cisco or HP. A redundant set up is able to deliver maximum security here.
Optimum utilisation
Making full use of your purchased data storage device with conventional methods is impossible. The following diagram shows the typical usage of hard disks and RAID systems bound to the server.
