Oracle Solaris
The next generation of Solaris operating systems, "Solaris 10", demonstrates what can be achieved through innovative development. The step towards opening the Solaris operating system to the OpenSource community allows users to take advantage of an open, future-proof operating system of the same quality and certification.

The container technology introduced in Solaris 10 enables the operating system to run the same operating systems in parallel on the same machine. These operating system instances run in so-called containers which represent separate units to the applications.
Containers
A container has its own IP address and is able to use all services offered by the operating system. It is possible to control the utilization of the containers, which means that it is possible to assign a certain number of CPUs to a container, depending on the application. In this way it is possible better exploit the servers, while the performance remains the same.
The applications do not affect each other. This ensures that new and old applications can run on the same machine without one application slowing down the other or even rendering it unusable.
The communication on the hardware side is unique. During communication between containers, the data does not leave the CPU or the direct environment. This results in maximum performance of applications with each other.
As usual, the administration is quick to learn and easy to use. Administrators with Unix experience will take just a few minutes to become familiar with the container technology.
Investment protection
Of the security concepts previously strictly reserved for military versions, a large number has now been released as standard versions. Due to the enhanced user rights management, applications normally requiring 'root' rights can be granted restricted access. This applies to standard applications such as web servers, and even to complex systems.
Solaris 10 is compatible with the entire Oracle/Sun hardware range, regardless of whether you are using a ten year old server with UltraSparc technology or the latest Oracle chip technology. You have full investment protection. Discussions regarding old or wrong versions or drivers will not arise with Solaris.
This is how you can protect your investment.
