Virtualising a Doctor's Practice - Health Service Case Study

Our current healthcare system is constantly changing the requirements for practices. It is self-evident that present-day health care professions cannot do without IT. However, it is rarely efficient when several employees share a PC and then need to find the time and the opportunity to generate medical reports and prescriptions.

Ideally, each therapist should have his or her own workstation.

Therapists, as a rule, have no desire to get caught up in technology; instead, they wish to spend their time with their patients.

Many practices, however, understandably shy away from such investments and the consequential costs that several PCs would incur. Storing and securing data on local systems presents many practices with unsolvable problems as far as data security and the legal requirements for patient data are concerned.

We have developed and implemented a concept that allows practices to run their software centrally, while medical professionals and staff are able to work on a screen with keyboard at each treatment place. The programmes are run centrally in the data centre. The workstations are connected with the data centre via a secure VPN connection. Moreover, it is possible to access the required data from every workstation using chip-card authentication.

Functions:

  • Practice management

  • Scheduling

  • Patient administration

  • Prescription management

  • Doctor's administration

  • Settlement with health insurances and billing centres

The operating costs are practically reduced to "zero", because the workstations no longer require configuration or data storage. The workstations are ergonomic. They do not require fans or hard disks and therefore do not generate any disturbing background noises.

Therapists can log in using their chip-card. This then enables them to work at every workstation within the practice. They have immediate access to all information necessary to run the practice, and can manage patient data, make appointments or print out appointment slips.

Expansion

Competition in health care often requires practices to expand and open up several locations. From the technical point of view, this is very easily done with the solution outlined above. Without the need to invest in infrastructure and with only a standard internet access point, all locations can be administrated and controlled centrally. The therapist's flexibility, as well as appointment management, are maintained across all locations. All bills and doctors' letters or medical reports can be accessed, generated and managed from each location.

Your staff can quickly and easily update all practice data from their home office or the Netbook via a secure VPN connection, thus contributing to a consistent database.
